Riddle: Why do blacksmiths bounce their hammers?
Answer: Scale forms on the surface of the metal and is transferred onto the face of the hammer on the first few blows. Tapping the hammer on the anvil clears the scale off the hammer head so it's not transferred to the metal you are working on again.
